» The truth about handmade custom tattoo machines. |
While we see more and more advertising for handmade tattoo machines, we all know that it is obvious that every tattoo machine is hand made, meaning the assembly. As far as my knowledge goes, there's not one robot made yet that can put a tattoo machine together, except for Asians, who work like robots for minimum wages.
The main difference in custom hand made tattoo machines and the ones who are assembled by hand in bulk is the procedure, the person who makes the tattoo machine and of course the quality of the materials used to make the tattoomachines.
Most tattoo machine builders don't do it for the money, but for the love of the technique behind the art of tattooing and the challenge to make a smooth running tattoomachine.
A custom hand build machine in my opinion starts from raw materials, and with a minimum use of ready made machine parts.
Other so called handmade tattoo machines are just assembled from components that are made in larger factories.
While many machine builders do their best to make similar frames as requested by some clients, 2 identical frames can not be made, unless the steel is pored in a cast or other procedures for large scale work are used.
Tattoo artists charge on an average about 30 to a 100 for a small tattoo, done in an hour, money in the pocket. Assembling a machine with standard parts can be done in less then an hour. While a custom build tattoo machine can take between a day and a week or even more, to be build from scratch. You make the math.
On top of all the above, most tattoo machine builders are either tattoo artists or retired tattoo artists, that's the only way you would know how to tune and set up a tattoomachine. Bearing this in mind, there's no way custom handbuild tattoomachines can be made on a large scale.
Now think about all this and you'll know that it is not possible for all those so called handmade tattoo machines to be sold as wholesale or in large quantities.
A real tattoomachine builder, crafter will be able to set your machine up to your needs, following their knowledge and experience. Although some will not reveal what materials they use and keep their little ‘secrets’ to themselves, they will be able to give you advice on what springs, coils, … to use, incase you want to tune the machine yourself.
There are some machine builders on our forum incase you’re looking for advice or want a unique and quality tattoomachine made.
Making good tattoomachines takes years of experimenting, a lot of money down the drain and many hours in the workshop and should be rewarded with respect to keep the term ‘handmade’ to the real tattoo machine builders.
